Board to Reconsider Action Regarding the Pledge of Allegiance

Calvin Williams, President of the Board of Education, has called a meeting for Monday October 15 at 5:00 p.m. in the Auditorium of Memorial High School, located at 201 South Gammon Road, to reconsider how our schools will comply with the state law relative to requiring the daily offering of the Pledge of Allegiance or the National Anthem.

It was not the Board's intent to ban the Pledge of Allegiance from our schools. The Board's action of October 8 was intended to protect our students' and staff's individual right to participate or not in the activity. A great deal of confusion has arisen about the intended implementation of the Board's action and we regret that.

Clearly the Board needs to reconsider the unintended interpretations of the action and determine a way of implementing the spirit and intent of the state law while ensuring that all people have the right to express their own beliefs and values in an appropriate way.

In the interim the schools will continue to have the option to offer either the Pledge of Allegiance or the National Anthem daily, as the state law directs.
