District Receives Waiver to Start School on August 26

Madison Schools will start the 2002-03 school year on Monday, August 26, after receiving notification from the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) granting a waiver from the new law requiring school to start the fall term after September 1. In subsequent years, school in Madison will start after September 1, unless the law is changed.

The Board of Education passed a resolution at its April 1 meeting requesting a waiver from the law due to a collective bargaining agreement with Madison Teachers, Inc. setting the school start date on August 26, 2002. The administrative rule adopted by the DPI and approved by the Legislature allowed for a waiver in circumstances where there was a collective bargaining agreement.

As of April 8, the DPI had approved 19 waivers to start the next school year before September 1 and had denied two requests for a waiver. The complete calendar for the 2002-03 school year is available through the district's Web site, http://www.mmsd.org, under "District Information - Calendar."
