Student enrollment in the Madison Metropolitan School District for the 2002-03 school year is 24,966 -- an increase of 73 students - according to the official enrollment count conducted on the third Friday in September, as required by state law. Last year's official enrollment was 24,893 students.
(Note: the enrollment figures presented to the Board of Education on September 23 were preliminary. This release is the first announcement of the official enrollment count.)
The total enrollment is also 257 students higher than the District's projected student count for this fall.
"This is the third straight year that our enrollment essentially stayed the same or went up slightly," says Superintendent Art Rainwater. "We are likely seeing a leveling of our projected enrollment decline, which is good news considering that current state revenue caps make it especially difficult on districts with declining enrollments."
The increase is solely attributable to a 2.2% jump at the high school level (grades 9-12) where there are 183 more students than last year. Enrollment at the high school level - currently 8,412 students -has gone up significantly over the past four years. Since 1998 the number of high school students has increased by 809, up by 10.6% from 7,603 students.
There are 110 fewer students this year at middle school (grades 6-8), while elementary level enrollment (grades K-5) remained exactly the same - 10,947 both this year and last.
