Staff members in nine categories will receive the Distinguished Service Award, the Madison School District's highest honor for meritorious contributions to Madison students and to Madison Schools. In addition, six students will receive the Joe Thomas Community Service Award, and seven teachers will be honored as winners and nominees for the Kohl Foundation Fellowship.
Fourteen individuals will receive the DSA, and so will the whole 34-member staff at Malcolm Shabazz City High School, sharing the Distinguished Service Award for a Team.
The winners will be recognized for the 18th consecutive year at a special meeting of the Board of Education on Monday, March 31 at 7 p.m. in the La Follette High School auditorium. The event will be videotaped and shown on MMSD-TV Cable Channel 10 on Tuesday, April 1 at 9 p.m. as well as on other evenings throughout the year.
The DSA and the Joe Thomas student award winners are chosen by a 21-member committee made up of teachers, administrators, parents, a student and citizens.
Kohl Foundation Fellows are chosen for their ability to inspire a love of learning and for their leadership and service. Two of the seven MMSD nominees were announced as winners by the Wisconsin Dept. of Public Instruction earlier this month.
