Expulsions in the Madison Schools dropped 25 percent during the 2001-02 school year, with 35 students expelled, compared to 47 in the previous school year. The 2001-02 enrollment for Madison Schools was 24,893.
Of the 35 students expelled, 34 students were given the opportunity to return to school prior to the expiration of their expulsion term, if they successfully participated in intervention strategies designed to address their reason for expulsion. There were 24 students (70% of those expelled) who took advantage of this option.
The primary offense that resulted in expulsion was possession of a weapon, threat to use a weapon, or actual use of a weapon. Of the 35 students expelled, 20 of the cases (57%) were weapons-related - 16 of the cases involved a knife, or other cutting instrument. Given the Board of Education's new policy (adopted last June) regarding "knives, and other cutting instruments," it is anticipated that there will be a further reduction in the number of expulsions for the possession of knives during the current school year.
The expulsions last year primarily involved high school students (26 students, 74% of students expelled); while 9 students (26% of those expelled) attended middle school. The overwhelming majority of the 35 students expelled were males (31 students, 89%), compared to four females (11%).
