Superintendent Art Rainwater announced Monday that District-sponsored trips abroad for this spring and summer have been cancelled. Rainwater said he believes the trips may pose a risk to staff and students.
Rainwater said the District will not sponsor any foreign travel for the remainder of 2003. School-sponsored trips in the United States and Canada are not affected.
In a memo to District principals and staff requesting school sponsorship of foreign travel Rainwater said, "Due to the Travel Caution issued by the State Department earlier this month, the anti-American demonstrations being held in many countries, the heightened security concerns in the major airports in Europe and the very real concern about a war with Iraq, the Madison Metropolitan School District will not sponsor foreign travel for the immediate future."
Rainwater said, "As always, parents and travel agents can do their own trips; it just can not be under the sponsorship of the MMSD." A trip to Beijing, China this spring and five separate trips to European countries scheduled for this summer are affected. The only foreign trip authorized is one to Quebec, Canada this summer.
