New Mann and Sánchez Scholars Named; Mann Scholars Graduation

The high school graduation of three Mann Scholars in the Madison Metro School District will be celebrated at an open house on Thursday, May 22, 2003 in the Red Gym (716 Langdon Street) on the UW-Madison campus. The event runs from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. with a program at 5:00 p.m.

The current Mann seniors are Pamela Chareun, West High School; Jonté Flowers, LaFollette High School, and Pahoua Thao, East High School. All three will continue their studies in Madison. They were named as Mann Scholars in 1999 as they entered high school.

The Mann Scholars program honors the legacy of Bernard and Kathlyn Mann, African American parents whose five children graduated from Madison schools and went on to earn college degrees. After their deaths, family and friends created an endowment fund through the Madison Community Foundation to support the academic achievement of promising high school students who are selected district-wide as eighth graders.

Selected Mann Scholars receive $1000 per year each year during high school, mentoring support and assistance in planning their high school and post-secondary studies.

The new Mann Scholars for 2003 are Zachary Kimbrew, Sherman Middle School; Karma Lhamo, Jefferson Middle School, and Lana Malone, Cherokee Middle School. They will be introduced at the May 22 open house.

Modeled after the Mann program, the Sánchez Scholar program was launched in 1999 by retired UW-Madison Professor Roberto Sánchez to support native Spanish-speaking students. New Sánchez Scholars for 2003 are Luis Barrios, Black Hawk Middle School; Miguel Inguanzo, Wright Middle School, and Matias Ledesma, Cherokee Middle School.

The Sánchez Scholars were honored recently at a community brunch.
