For Immediate Release
The second-highest number of Madison School District students - 57 -- has qualified as semifinalists in competition for the 2003 National Merit Scholarship Awards. Two additional Madison students have earned National Merit Achievement semifinalist status.
(Note: 57 is the correct number, different than an earlier media report. One semifinalist has moved out of the District, and according to the National Merit Corporation, should not be counted as a District semifinalist.)
The record number of 58 Scholarship semifinalists was set last year. Three years ago there were 47 semifinalists from Madison, while five years ago there were 38.
According to the National Merit Corporation, 1.33% of test-taking students become semi-finalists. Based on that percentage, the Madison district should have about 10 semifinalists.
"First and foremost it's the students, parents and families who have done the extremely hard work over a long period of time to earn this honor," said Superintendent Art Rainwater. "We are very pleased and proud that our teachers and other school staff have contributed to the success of these students."
The National Merit Achievement program honors outstanding African-American students who scored in the top five percent on the qualifying test.
All semifinalists must meet academic and other standards to advance to the finalist level and consideration for college undergraduate scholarships.
Madison's Scholarship semi-finalists include: Daniel Adamowicz, William Good, Shayle Kann, James Marshment-Howell, Ira Ochs, Rachel Penczykowski, Joseph Pinilla, Holly Rockweiler, Alissa Romens, Joseph Ryan, Tom Sanna, Elise Wehrman from East High School; Lucas Johnson and Mark Frazier from La Follette High School; Anand Anbalagan, Michelle Bridwell, Caroline Camic, Harry Chou, Kieran Coe, Jared Grogan, Meghan Harney, David Hoffert, Lillian Huppler, Jayanth Iyengar, Daniella Lisse, Po-Ru Loh, Miriam Ostrov, Samantha Worzalla, Robin Sarabia, Maureen Schneck, Julia Sheahan, Abby Stevens, Samantha Stoll, Sarah Verrill, Anna Washenko, Jennifer Wilkelaw, Timothy Wymore, Elisabeth Zerofsky from Memorial High School; Shuhan Bao, Srikanth Batchu, Matthew Carter, Alix Gould-Werth, Andreas Hager, Laura Harris-Smith, Evan Hill, Matthew Jacobs, Daniel Kane, Joseph Kohl-Riggs, Ajay Limaye, Caitlin Mussey, Jose Quintans, Kevin Reschke, Zane Serlin, Brendan Steele, Lindsay Theisen, Joyce Weng, Yian Zhang from West High School.
