Two current Madison School District educators have been promoted to become principals at Sennett Middle and Marquette Elementary Schools, and a Madison Schools graduate is returning from the Los Angeles area to become principal at Midvale Elementary. Colleen Lodholz will be the new principal at Sennett, Joy Larson will lead Marquette and John Burkholder will oversee Midvale.
All three appointments begin later this summer and are pending the approval of the Board of Education at its July 7 meeting.
Colleen Lodholz has been an assistant principal at La Follette High School for two years and has been with the district for 22 years. Lodholz was a speech and language clinician and a program support teacher before going to La Follette. She has a master's degree in Educational Leadership and a master's degree in Communicative Disorders. Lodholz replaces longtime Sennett Principal Jan Dowden, who is retiring.
For the last four years Joy Larson has been a support teacher in the Collaborative School Reform Project and in English as a Second Language. She started with Madison schools 12 years ago as a Special Education and Talented & Gifted teacher. Larson holds a master's degree in Educational Administration. At Marquette, she will replace Jerald Tollefson, who will become the principal at Falk Elementary School.
John Burkholder graduated from Madison West, obtained a master's degree in business from UW-Madison, and earned a doctoral degree in education administration from the University of Southern California. He taught for eight years in the Los Angeles school district, and was both an elementary school assistant principal and principal in Glendale, CA. He replaces Jennifer Allen who will become the elementary school lead principal. This position provides support and assistance to elementary principals in areas such as data analysis and interpretation, and school improvement actions.
