Student enrollment in the Madison Metropolitan School District for the 2003-04 school year is 24,888 -- a decrease of 78 students - according to the official enrollment count conducted on the third Friday in September, as required by state law. Last year's official enrollment was 24,966 students, meaning the decline represents less than one-third of one per cent.
Two years ago, Madison's official enrollment count was 24,893, a difference of just five students compared to this year. The total enrollment is 57 students higher than the District's projected student count for this fall (24,831).
"While we are pleased to be slightly over our projected enrollment, the five-year trend line for the Madison district is very flat," says Superintendent Art Rainwater. "We are seeing a stable enrollment; that's good news considering we had projected a long term decrease and state revenue caps make it especially difficult on districts with declining enrollments."
The slight decrease is because of a 2.4% drop (135 students) at the middle school level (grades 6-8). The number of elementary students (gr. K-5) is up 41 while there are 16 more high school students (gr. 9-12).
Enrollment at the high school level - currently 8,429 students -has gone up significantly over the past five years. Since 1998 the number of high school students has increased by 825, up by 10.8% from 7,603 students.
