Madison Students Again Outperform State, National Peers on ACT

For the 17th straight year, Madison students who took the ACT collegiate entrance exam outperformed their state and national peers. Madison students in the Class of 2003 compiled a 23.9 composite score on the test compared to 22.2 for their Wisconsin peers, and 20.8 nationally.

The average Madison ACT participant scored higher than roughly 70% of all Wisconsin participants, and 77% higher than ACT participants across the country.

About 68 percent of Madison 12th graders took the ACT. Composite scores for Madison Asian students jumped over one full point compared to 2002 (22.1 - '03, 21.1 - '02), and African-American students in Madison showed a marginal increase (18.6 - '03, 18.5 - '02).

For each major ethnic group (African-American, Asian, Hispanic), students in Madison outperformed their peers across the state and nation in average composite score. Compared to their state peers, Madison ethnic and racial subgroups scored generally 9-10% higher on the ACT; the same subgroups scored between 10-14% higher than their national peers.

The ACT exam is administered locally by the American College Testing Program and covers English, math, reading, and science reasoning. The ACT exam is graded on a scale of 1 to 36. The ACT is one of two major tests for students planning to enter a four-year college.
