The high school graduation of four Mann Scholars in the Madison School District is being celebrated at an open house on Monday, May 24 in the Red Gym (716 Langdon Street) on the UW-Madison campus. The event runs from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. with a program at 5:00 p.m.
The current Mann seniors are Cecile Gamble and Roosevelt Williams, West High School; Fallon Jones, Memorial High School, and Regina Jones, LaFollette High School. All four will continue their studies in Madison at Madison Area Technical College. They were named as Mann Scholars in 2000 as they entered high school.
The new Mann Scholars for 2004 are Monica Cherry, Sherman Middle School; Chia Lor, Sennett Middle School, and Tai'kiah Phillips, Jefferson Middle School. They will be introduced at the open house.
The Mann Scholars program honors the legacy of Bernard and Kathlyn Mann, African American parents whose five children graduated from Madison schools and went on to earn college degrees. After their deaths, family and friends created an endowment fund through the Madison Community Foundation to support the academic achievement of promising high school students who are selected district-wide as eighth graders.
Selected Mann Scholars receive $1000 per year each year during high school, mentoring support and assistance in planning their high school and post-secondary studies.
