For Immediate Release
Friday, April 30, 2004, 2:30 p.m.
O'Keeffe Middle School will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, May 3 and 4, as a result of water damage that occurred overnight. A faulty toilet valve on the third floor of the school caused overflowing water to damage sections of the third, second and first floors.
To dry out the building sooner and minimize further damage, the school building will be super heated for the next 48 hours. As a result of this and the need for a thorough cleaning and repair of rooms, classes will not be held at O'Keeffe on either Monday or Tuesday.
Classes were held at the school today thanks to the cooperation and flexibility of the O'Keeffe staff and students. "Our staff and students did a great job in adapting to the situation as we rotated rooms to facilitate instruction," said Principal Pat Delmore.
The cascading water, which was discovered at about 5:30 a.m., had several hours to damage floors, ceilings and school materials. About two-thirds of the O'Keeffe classrooms were affected.
Damage was minimal at Marquette Elementary School, which is connected to O'Keeffe. Marquette will continue to be open on Monday and Tuesday.
Students, parents and guardians are being notified this afternoon and evening of the two day closing.
