Start / Dismissal Times for Middle and High Schools Made Consistent

The daily start and dismissal times for Madison middle and high schools have been made consistent, and the new times will result in changes for students in five schools.

High schools, except La Follette, will begin at 8:25 a.m. La Follette will remain at 8:00 a.m. this year due to their 4-block schedule. Middle schools will be in session from 7:45 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. Spring Harbor and Wright Middle Schools, which draw students from larger areas, will remain at 8:00 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. because busses to these schools have longer routes.

Ten of the 15 middle and high schools' start times are not changing. Among the five which are changing, O'Keeffe and Hamilton Middle Schools are most affected - starting earlier by 30 minutes and 20 minutes respectively. Three schools are starting school later: East - 10 minutes, Memorial - 8 minutes, and Black Hawk - 5 minutes.

These changes are being made to realize bus transportation cost savings and to be able to better schedule after-school interscholastic activities. The transportation savings result from more efficient bus scheduling and is estimated at between $35,000 and $100,000 depending on contract rates.

"We truly appreciate that families will alter their schedules where necessary to accommodate these changes," said Superintendent Art Rainwater. "Under the ever-tightening revenue caps, we have to be as frugal and efficient as possible in our scheduling."

The start/dismissal times for all schools are available on the district Web site at http://www.madison.k12.wi.us/dismissal.htm.
