Two Middle School Principals Selected

Principals have been selected for Hamilton and Toki Middle Schools and recommended for approval by the Board of Education at its Monday, July 11 meeting.

Henry Schmelz, most recently a three-year associate principal at Elkhorn High School, has been selected to lead Hamilton Middle School, 4801 Waukesha St. Schmelz spent eight years as a grades 7-12 social studies teacher for the Folsom-Cordova (California) School District. He also served as a middle school associate principal for five years with the Modesto (California) City Schools. In 1989 Schmelz received a bachelor's degree in social science from California State University - Sacramento and a master's degree in school administration from National University in Sacramento.

Joe Gothard, currently the dean of students at La Follette High School, has been selected to be the principal for Toki Middle School, 5606 Russett Road. Gothard began working for Madison Schools in 1993 when he served three years as an educational assistant at Lincoln Elementary School. He worked for two years as a youth program assistant for the East Madison Community Center. Gothard was a biology teacher at La Follette HS for four years, before his two-year tenure as the school's dean of students. Gothard received his bachelor's degree in biology education in 1999 and a master's degree in educational administration in 2004, both from Edgewood College.
