Principals have been selected for Emerson, Glendale, Orchard Ridge and Sandburg elementary schools and recommended for approval by the Board of Education at its Monday, July 11 meeting.
Karen Kepler, who spent 10 years in the classroom in Milwaukee Public Schools and at Lowell Elementary in Madison, has been selected to lead Emerson Elementary, 2421 E. Johnson St. For the past three years, Kepler has been an elementary Talented and Gifted resource teacher for Madison Schools. Kepler received her bachelor's degree from UW-Whitewater in 1993 and a master's degree in educational leadership from Cardinal Stritch University in 2005. She replaces Dan Shumway, who is pursuing opportunities in the private sector.
Michael "Mickey" Buhl has been selected for the principal position at Glendale Elementary, 1201 Tompkins Drive. Buhl, a former Congressional Budget Office budget analyst in Washington D.C., was a classroom teacher in Tucson, Arizona and Lodi, Wisconsin prior to becoming the principal at Grand Avenue Elementary in Sauk Prairie in 2000. Buhl received a bachelor's degree in economics and political science in 1990 from the University of North Carolina; a master's degree in public policy in 1992 from the University of California - Berkeley; and, a master's degree in elementary education in 1995 from the College of William and Mary. He replaces Carol Heibel, who retired.
Barb Dorn, who has spent her 14-year career as an educator in the Madison Schools, has been selected to lead Orchard Ridge Elementary, 5602 Russett Road. During those years she served as a summer school intern principal, taught 4/5 grade and was the school improvement facilitator at Chavez Elementary; she was the school-wide Title I and Comprehensive School Reform facilitator at Lowell Elementary; has been a Gateways Coach/Reading Recovery advocate; and, taught 6-8 graders in a multi-age classroom at Sennett Middle School. She received a bachelor's degree in 1991 from UW-Madison in elementary education and a master's in educational leadership from Cardinal Stritch University in 2004. She replaces Michael Hertting, who is taking a leave of absence for career exploration.
Michael Deignan, who began his education career with Madison Schools in 1989, has been selected as the principal for Sandburg Elementary, 4114 Donald Drive. Deignan spent 11 years as a physical education teacher in several Madison schools. He served as an interim assistant principal at Falk Elementary during the 2000-01 school year. Since 2001, he has been the learning coordinator at Spring Harbor Middle School. He received his bachelor's degree in physical education from UW-Madison in 1988 and his master's degree in educational administration from UW-Madison in 2002. He replaces Linda Kailin, who will become the principal at John Muir Elementary.
