Susan Abplanalp Named Assistant Superintendent

Susan Abplanalp, former principal at Lowell School and MMSD Elementary Lead Principal, has been named Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Schools beginning this summer. The appointment is pending approval by the Board of Education at its May 2 meeting.

Abplanalp will replace Jane Belmore, who is retiring after 29 years with the district, including the last 5 years as assistant superintendent.

Abplanalp will be responsible for the supervision of all 31 Madison elementary schools. She is currently the Director of Select Government Programs where she has supervised the district's staff professional development and federal Title I programs.

Prior to the two years in her current position, Susan was Elementary Lead Principal for two years. This involved providing leadership support to elementary principals, including implementation of strategic priorities and supervision of teachers. During her four years leading Lowell, the school received a federal award for school reform.

Abplanalp has a Bachelor's degree in elementary education, a Master's degree from Edgewood College in educational administration, and a Ph.D. from UW-Madison in educational administration.
