MMSD Staff and Student Awards Announced

Distinguished Service and Joe Thomas Winners plus Kohl Fellows to be Honored

Staff members and citizens in ten categories will receive the Distinguished Service Award, the Madison School District's highest honor for meritorious contributions to Madison students and to Madison Schools. In addition, five students will receive the Joe Thomas Community Service Award, while seven other students will be recognized as Thomas Award nominees for their outstanding accomplishments. In addition five teachers will be honored as recipients and two as nominees for the Kohl Foundation Teaching Fellowship.

Seventeen individuals will receive the DSA, while 27 other persons will be recognized as DSA nominees for their outstanding efforts.

All of the above will be recognized at a special meeting of the Board of Education on Monday, April 25 at 7 p.m. in the La Follette High School auditorium. The event will be videotaped and shown on MMSD-TV Cable Channel 10 on Tuesday, April 26 at 9 p.m., as well as on other evenings throughout the year.

The DSA and the Joe Thomas student award winners are chosen by a 21-member committee made up of teachers, administrators, parents, a student and citizens.

Kohl Foundation Fellows are nominated for their ability to inspire a love of learning and for their leadership and service. Selection of the Kohl Fellows is made by the Cooperative Educational Service Association (CESA) District 2, and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. That five Kohl Fellows have been selected this year in Madison is exceptional considering that the district has averaged less than two per year over the past decade.
