13 nominated for Citizens Naming Committee

During the Monday, November 4 Regular Board of Education meeting, Board President Arlene Silveira will nominate 13 persons to serve on the Citizens Naming Committee for the new elementary school.  Initial nominations were made by individual Board members.

The names of the citizens to be nominated are:

Nikki Baumblatt
LaVonne LaFave Bennett
Tom Brien
Salvadore Carranza
Cindy Crane
Enrique Gandara
Aiesha Golden
Mary Gulbrandsen
Karen Helle
Peng Her
Kris Koval
David Mollenhoff
Angie Thomas

The Board President will also nominate David Mollenhoff to serve as the chair of the committee.

Following Board approval, the committee will be responsible for reviewing the proposed school names, the public comments and any additional research.  The committee also determines that the proposed names meet the naming criteria as established in BOE Policy 6700.

The committee will meet through the month of January and recommend to the Board a minimum of four names and the reasons for the recommendations.  The Board will select a name for the new school from the names recommended by the committee.

“I am so pleased with the list of people the Board nominated to serve on the Citizens Naming Committee," said Silveira.  "We have a broad representation from around our District, and the nominees are an open-minded group, willing to listen and work hard in developing name recommendations for the Board.”

Until December 3, citizens are invited to comment on as many of the 87 suggested names as they wish.  They can go to www.mmsd.org and click on "New Elementary School", or send comments to Public Information, Madison School District, 545 W. Dayton St., Madison, WI 53703
