87 names suggested; now’s the time to make comments

Over twice as many names for Madison's new elementary school have been suggested compared to the initial name suggestion period earlier this year.  A total of 87 names were submitted in a one month time period that ended on October 22.  The full list of suggested names is below.

Citizens now have until December 3 to comment on as many of the 87 suggestions as they wish.  Go to www.madison.k12.wi.us/topics/newschool/ to provide feedback.  Citizens can also send comments (by Dec. 3) to Public Information, Madison School District, 545 W. Dayton St., Madison, WI 53703.

The next steps in the naming of the new school involve a 13-member Board of Education-appointed Citizens Naming Committee.  The Committee will review the suggestions and the comments, and can do additional research on the proposed names.  By February 4, the Committee will recommend to the Board a minimum of four names.

The Board of Education will hold a public hearing during the week of February 11, and will select a name in March.

Meanwhile, construction of the new school -- to be located on the far West side -- continues on schedule for a September, 2008 opening.  Structural walls are being built, and the building should be fully enclosed by February.  Real-time video from the construction site is also available at the same "New Elementary School" Web site.

In the earlier suggestion period, 41 names were submitted.  Vang Pao Elementary School was selected, but the Board voted in June to re-name the school and then re-started the naming process with a revised policy.
