East High Principal Milt McPike has won the Educator of the Year award from the Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce, the state's largest business group. McPike will receive the award on Thursday, October 1 at 1:30 p.m. in the school's Career Center, Room 224.
McPike, who was nominated for the award by Research Products Corporation CEO Vern Hellenbrand, has won several awards throughout his 24 years with the Madison schools including: the 1997 Principal of the Year from his peers in the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators; the Reader's Digest "National Hero in Education" award; and his school was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a "National Secondary School of Excellence" in 1989.
Hellenbrand, a member Board of Directors for the district's Business and Education Partnership, Inc. committee, participated in the "Principal For a Day" program with McPike. In his nomination letter Hellenbrand wrote, "I observed the love and respect the students had for their principal. He was very visible in the areas of the school from the mall, through the halls on all three floors, in the classroom, and on the grounds outside the building.
"He demonstrated his concern for students through expressing words of encouragement, listening to their concerns, preventing disruptive behavior from getting out of hand and helping with the problem solving process. The schools, community, the City of Madison and the State of Wisconsin are enhanced by his leadership, his involvement and his accomplishments."
McPike has been principal at East High School since 1979.
