Fifty-one Madison high school students -- the highest number in the district's history -- have qualified as finalists in the competition for 1999 National Merit Scholarship awards.
Madison's finalists include: Erica Coffey, Jacob Conrad, Colleen Conway, Gregory Packnett and Andrew Schmidt of La Follette High School; Eric Bruning, Elyse Lerum, David Lorentz, Max Magee, Gabriel Moskoff and Christina Peters of East High School; Peter Bugg, Orelia Busch, Victor Chubukov, Caitlin Doran, Jenny Gassman-Pines, Alexandra Greist, Eric Gruen, Eleanor Heikkinen, Tarah Heinzen, Christoph Ibele, Alexander Jacobs, Elisabeth Jones, Aliza Judd, Denise Kim, Peter Koechley, Alexandra Lubniewski, Catherine Morgan, Rebecca Nagel, Stephen Rogness, Abigail Ryan, Megan Santarius, Susan Simpson, James Sundquist, Ken Terao, Michael Wang, Ariel Weisbard, Benjamin Wikler and Lydia Wilson of West High School; and Karthik Anbalagan, David Bugge, Susannah Camic, Peter Chang, Caleb Creswell, Andrew Holbrook, Nidhi Kashyap, Brian Kleinheinz, Megan Koehler, Patrick Martin, Jessica C. Pleuss and Sarah Reinsel of Memorial High School.
Last September, the district announced that 54 students had qualified as semifinalists for the prestigious scholarships. The Madison semifinalists were among some 15,500 selected from among the more than 1.2 million high school students nationally who entered the 1999 Merit Program as juniors by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). This field was then narrowed to about 7,600 finalists nationally.
To make the final cut, semifinalists had to fulfill additional requirements, including maintaining an outstanding academic record throughout high school, being endorsed and recommended by the high school principal and submitting SAT scores that confirmed the earlier PSAT/NMSQT performance.
