Pat Mooney, a school social worker at Emerson Elementary School who works in Emerson's Transition Education Program for homeless children, has been selected Wisconsin School Social Worker of the Year.
Mooney will receive the award from the Wisconsin School Social Workers Association at the organization's fall conference on Thursday, October 29 in Madison at the Quality Inn South.
Mooney has worked for the Madison school district since 1974. In his role as a school social worker in the homeless program, he provides direct services to students and their families. He also coordinates services with other agencies, and has been a leader in the development of programs and services that meet the needs of homeless children.
He is a tireless advocate for the poor, a committed social activist and a recognized local expert on homelessness. Mooney has taught at countless workshops and conferences on homelessness and the effects of student mobility on educational performance. He helped develop the U.S. Department of Education's publication, Meeting the Educational Needs of Homeless Children and Youth: A Resource for Schools and Communities.
Mooney has been active in the National Association of Social Workers, and is a leader in the local teachers union, Madison Teachers Inc.
