The Madison School-Community Recreation (MSCR) program will receive the 1998 Wisconsin Park and Recreation Association (WPRA) Silver Star Award in the Older Adult Activities category for its Goodman-Rotary Senior Fitness program, MSCR Director Lucy Chaffin announced. WPRA annually awards the Silver Star for top Wisconsin programs in ten categories.
The senior fitness program at MSCR began in 1994 through a $250,000 contribution from local philanthropists Bob and Irv Goodman. The program has expanded annually and the Goodmans recently donated another $100,000 to a trust fund established through the Downtown Rotary Club.
The fitness programs benefit over 1,800 seniors annually. Participants experience a wide range of benefits including: increased flexibility/mobility, decreased dependence on arthritis medicine, companionship, new skill development and more.
The Silver Star Award will be presented to MSCR in Stevens Point at the WPRA annual convention in November. MSCR will also make a ten minute presentation about the Goodman-Rotary Senior Fitness program to the conference attendees.
