Muir Teachers Win National Award for Math Instruction

National Honor Highlighted in Full-Page USA Today Ad

John Muir Elementary School teachers Annie Keith, Mary Bostrom, Sue Berthouex and Barb Wiesner have earned national recognition for their work in teaching mathematics, becoming one of only 17 elementary school sites from across the country to receive a 1999 Toyota TIME grant.

A partnership with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, TIME (Toyota's Investment in Mathematics Education) provides individual grants of up to $10,000 to help teachers explore innovative educational methods. The Muir teachers won the grant for their Investigating Developments in Early Algebra (IDEA) program.

The Muir teachers were the only recipients from Wisconsin selected for the honor, which was featured in a full-page ad in USA Today. Keith, Berthouex and Wiesner teach first- and second-grade students and Bostrom teaches third- and fourth-grade students at Muir.
