Lowell Elementary Celebrates Nonviolence Program with Peace Parade

Lowell Elementary School students and staff will kick off the second year of the school's Peace Program with a parade through the school neighborhood on Friday, September 4 at 2:10 p.m. The school is located at 401 Maple Avenue, near the intersection of Fair Oaks and Atwood Avenue.

The parade will include singing, 1960s dress and remarks by representatives of Mayor Sue Bauman's office and the Madison Police Department. The parade route will begin on Atwood Avenue.

The program's goal is to help students solve problems cooperatively and non-violently by teaching social and conflict resolution skills. A "peace flag" is displayed outside of each classroom. When conflicts are not handled peacefully, the flag is taken down for the day. Teachers and staff work with students to help them process and resolve the conflict. The flag is put up again the next day.

Classrooms that display their peace flag for a whole week receive various incentive awards. Special activities are planned quarterly for those classrooms that keep their flag up the longest.

"Our students have really caught on to the program," said Principal Sue Abplanalp. "The peace flags are a visible message to all that we don't tolerate fighting. It's really making a difference for our kids and teachers."
