The Board of Education will finalize the school district's 1998-99 operating budget Monday night. The board's Budget and Finance Committee will vote on the budget at its 6 p.m. meeting. The full board is scheduled to take up the budget at 6:30.
The amended budget calls for $244.3 million in spending for the 1998-99 school year. Under the plan, the property tax levy is $158,646,124, a reduction of $929,461 from last year's school levy. The district's tax rate falls from $15.12 per $1,000 of property value to $14.32 mills, a 5.3% reduction.
The district's property tax levy for 1998-99 is $15.4 million lower than it was three years ago, a decrease of 8.8% since 1995-96 when local property taxpayers paid $174,020,237 to cover school costs. The school tax rate has decreased by almost a third since 1992-93, dropping from $20.69 per $1,000 of property value that year to $14.32 this year, a 30.8% reduction.
