Sandburg Elementary School Celebrates 30th Anniversary with Mural Dedication

Sandburg Elementary School will kick off its 30th anniversary with the unveiling of a unique mural funded by Sandburg students, parents and teachers.

Entitled "Kaylorbirds," the 12' by 8' three-dimensional wood mural which features images of plants, trees and birds in rich, bright color, will be dedicated on Tuesday, September 1 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the school, 4114 Donald Drive, Madison. The dedication will include a presentation by students, and remarks by Principal Linda Kailin, District Fine Arts Coordinator Mariel Wozniak and the mural's creator, Madison artist Shelbee Matis.

"The whole school community made this possible," said Dunnell Kendrick- Parker, Sandburg art teacher and the project's coordinator. "We had a silent auction, the kids sold popcorn, and the artist – who lives right in our neighborhood – donated half the cost of the mural."

Sandburg places a strong emphasis on the arts, according to Principal Linda Kailin. "What better way to celebrate 30 years as a true neighborhood school than with a piece of art that the entire neighborhood made possible," Kailin said.
