Students Ready for School Board Representative Race

Election Slated for Week of October 12

Seven students have announced their candidacy for student representative or alternate to the Madison Board of Education (BOE). One student representative and one alternate will be selected in a citywide election among the district's 7,600 high school students. The BOE voted earlier this year to add a student voice to Board deliberations.

The four running for the student representative slot are: Haben Goitom, Grade 12, Memorial HS; Kate Henningsen, Grade 11, East HS; Jim Ploeser, Grade 12, West HS; and Beth Reschke, Grade 12, East HS.

The three students running for the alternate student representative are: Pabitra Benjamin, Grade 12, West HS; Liz Maier, Grade 12, Memorial HS; and Mackinnon Webster, Grade 11, East HS. The alternate will attend meetings when the student representative is unable.

During the week of October 5 the seven candidates will appear at lunchtime forums to discuss their platforms. On Tuesday, October 6 at 4 p.m. in Room 218 of the Doyle Administration Building, the candidates will also participate in a forum on Cable Channel 10, the school district's television station. The forum will be broadcast at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 9 through Sunday, October 11.

High school students will vote in classes using scan-tron sheets during the week of October 12. Results will be announced on Monday, October 16.

The lunchtime forum schedule is:
Monday, October 5, 11:10 a.m., La Follette HS;
Tuesday, October 6, 11:10 a.m., West HS;
Wednesday, October 7, 11 a.m. Memorial HS;
Thursday, October 8, 11:15 a.m., East HS;
Friday, October 9, 11:50 a.m., Shabazz HS.
