Ken Syke, former Madison television journalist, has been named the public communications/community relations coordinator for the district, following approval by the Madison Board of Education at Monday night's meeting.
Syke has been the vice-president of Chamber activities for the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce since 1993. From 1988-92 he was the media relations coordinator and director of community relations for St. Marys Hospital Medical Center in Madison.
Between 1973 and 1986, Syke worked as a television journalist. He started as a reporter and anchor for WAEO-TV, Rhinelander, Wisconsin (1973-74). He was the sports director for KDUB-TV in Dubuque, Iowa (1974); a reporter for news, weather and sports at WQAD-TV, in Moline, Illinois (1975); and, the assistant sports director and sports director for WKOW-TV in Madison (1975-86).
Syke holds a bachelor's degree in Philosophy from St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. Syke begins with the district on Monday, August 9. He replaces Mike McCabe who resigned from the district in April to work for the private, non-profit Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, an organization dedicated to campaign finance reform.
