Memorial's 'Cuban Experience' Wins First Place at ThinkQuest

Memorial Students Take First Place for Second Straight Year

Memorial Junior Jacob Kitzman and Sophomore David Mericle's "The Cuban Experience" won first place last weekend in the Social Sciences category of the 1998 international ThinkQuest contest held in Los Angeles. The two Madison students teamed with Gim Teck Won, 17, of Singapore on the Web site project.

"I created my first Web site when I was 14," Kitzman told the Los Angeles Times. "The Cuban Experience" is an interactive site (http://hyperion.advanced.org/183 55/) that examines Cuba's culture, history, politics, travel and more. "People really don't know much about Cuba, there was not a lot about it on the Web," Kitzman, 17, explained, adding that both he and Mericle, 15, visited the island nation this summer with a study group.

Andrew Holbrook, a Memorial senior, finished first place in the 1997 finals with his "Mission to Mars" Web page. This year, Holbrook advanced to the finals, finishing fifth -- also in the Social Sciences category -- for his "Lessons of War" (http://hyperion.advanced.org/166 50/) page. He teamed up with students from Bassett, Virginia and Jever, Germany. Holbrook wins a $5,000 scholarship.

Kitzman and Mericle each won $15,000 in scholarships for their first place entry. The three teamamtes worked together via the Internet and the two Madison students never met their Singapore partner until last weekend. "Near the end we exchanged pictures," Mericle said, "so we would recognize each other."
