State Arts Board Approves Grant for Madison Victims of Violence Sculpture

Student Interns Prepare to Interview Local Residents

The Wisconsin Arts Board has approved a $5,800 grant for nationally renowned sculptor Brad McCallum's "A Path of Voices" artwork that will be designed to provoke discussion and action about the growth of violence in Madison and its impact on our social fabric. The amount of the grant is contingent upon the legislature's approval of the Arts Board's budget.

The WI Arts Board grant is part of ongoing efforts to raise private funds and grants for the sculpture. The sculpture's location should be selected this summer and by mid-fall the exact theme and message of the sculpture should be determined. The final work is tentatively scheduled to be unveiled in 2000.

McCallum has selected 15 student interns, representing Madison's five high schools, to conduct interviews with local residents that have been affected by violence. The students, who were recommended by school staff for their participation in peer mediation, or related activities, will begin interviewing people Saturday, May 1. Before hitting the streets, the students will meet at 10 am at the YWCA, 101 E. Mifflin Street, in the Vilas Conference Room on the 11th floor.

McCallum, a 1985 West High School graduate, incorporates audio with his sculpture. In Hartford, Connecticut he used manhole covers made from confiscated, melted-down handguns for "The Manhole Cover Project: A Gun Legacy."
