Howard Fried, currently an assistant principal at Memorial High School, has been named principal of Cross Country Elementary School, the new school on Madison's southwest side. Also, Christopher Nelson has been appointed as Coordinator of Athletics, Physical Education and Health Education. Both appointments are pending the approval of the Board of Education at its June 5 meeting.
The new Cross Country School is scheduled to open in August, 2001. For the coming year, Fried will be assisting with the administrative duties of nearby Huegel School as well as working to prepare for the opening of Cross Country.
Fried has been an assistant principal at Memorial since 1989, shortly after he became certified in Educational Administration through the University of North Carolina. Previously Fried had been a counselor in North Carolina and Wisconsin. He has a bachelor's degree in Secondary Education from Penn State, and a master's degree in Counseling and Guidance from UW-Madison.
Nelson is currently Activities Director (Gr. 7–12)/Assistant Principal in the Beaver Dam School District, where he has been since 1994. For eight years prior to that, he was a high school principal and athletic director in the Randolph School District. Nelson holds a bachelor's degree in history and social studies from UW-Whitewater, and a master's degree in Secondary Education Curriculum and Supervision from UW-Oshkosh.
Nelson replaces John Olson, who has held the position on an interim basis.
