Seven Madison School District teachers have been selected as state finalists for this year's Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
The program names twelve finalists in each state -- three teachers in each of four categories. Thus, Madison teachers represent seven of the twelve instructors chosen, at least one in every category, and all three teachers named in elementary science.
The seven teachers, their schools and categories:
They are now candidates for the national-level Presidential Awards to be announced next year.
"To be selected as one of the best math or science teachers in the state is an outstanding accomplishment, and these teachers deserve our acclaim," said Superintendent Art Rainwater. "That Madison teachers comprise over half of the honorees speaks volumes about the tremendous teachers we have in this truly great school district."
The news that Madison teachers represent 58 percent of this year's finalists comes one month after Madison students comprised 58 percent (seven of twelve) Wisconsin students named as Presidential Scholar semifinalists. Both Presidential Scholars selected as winners are from Madison as well.
Suzanne Folberg of Madison, a math teacher at Cherokee Middle, received the Presidential Award this year, and is being honored this week in Washington, D.C.
