FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FRIDAY, JULY 7, 2000
The Madison Metropolitan School District will host an open house on Thursday, July 13 from 5-7 p.m. for the community to celebrate the opening of the Learning Center on Allied, 2237 Allied Drive.
A brief program and ribbon-cutting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Students will conduct tours of the facility and information about fall programs will also be available. Food and drinks will be offered.
The Center has been open since the end of June and over 100 neighborhood children are in programs ranging from the Summer Reading Academy for students entering grades 1-3 to Madison School-Community Recreation programs for elementary age students. The Center is open from 7:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the summer and will close at 7 p.m. during the school year.
The Center has a satellite office for the registrar, a community learning specialist and a Safe Haven site supervisor responsible for after school activities. During the school year, the Center will accommodate two preschool classes serving up to 30 children and two Memorial High School classes for up to 30 students. The community organization Joining Forces for Families will have a school social worker at the Center. After-school programs will include MSCR activities and clubs and middle school students serving as math tutors for elementary students.
"We're excited about the programs being offered and the prospects for the Allied Learning Center," said Superintendent Art Rainwater. "We're looking forward to strengthening our ties to the families in the Allied Drive area."
