FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 4, 2000
The Madison Metropolitan School District has purchased a building on Allied Drive to serve as a learning center for current and added academic and recreational services to area students.
The eight unit apartment building, located at 2237 Allied Drive, has been purchased from Duane Steinhauer and Jack Rutledge for $210,000.
Purchase of the building allows the school district to centralize current programs for Allied Drive students with new programs resulting from the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Grant at a site that is centrally located in the neighborhood.
The learning center will serve as an after school safe haven, as a community learning center, as home for a program to assist high school students to stay on track, as the site for a summer reading academy, and for future shared programs.
Funding for the purchase will come from unallocated revenues and rents currently paid for the programs involved. The district estimates a remodeling cost of $250,000, to be funded from use payments from the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Grant.
