MMSD Wins 3-Year, $1.8 million Community Learning Center Grant

Allis, Falk, Hawthorne and Leopold Host Schools

The U.S. Department of Education announced last week that Madison is the recipient of a 3-year, $1.8 million 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CLC) grant. The centers focus on expanding educational and recreational opportunities based on community needs. It is anticipated that the grant will serve 2,200 students and 2,000 community members.

The grant allows four new centers to open this fall at Allis, Falk, Hawthorne and Leopold, in addition to existing centers at Lowell, Glendale and Mendota. The project goals of the CLCs are:

  1. Expand the level of educational and recreational programming and participation during "non-class" school hours.
  2. Maximize and focus the use of existing community resources within the CLCs through collaboration.
  3. Promote academic growth of early adolescents, other students and community residents, especially in the areas of math and reading.
  4. Promote positive youth and adult development and direction within a drug and violence free environment.

The CLCs are cooperative ventures with Dane County, the City of Madison, United Way, MATC and others. More information on CLCs is available at MSCR's Web page, <http://www.madison.k12.wi.us/mscr/>.
