Madison Schools Honor Distinguished Service Award Winners and Kohl Fellowship Nominees

The Madison Metropolitan School District will recognize the recipients of the district's Distinguished Service Award (DSA) and the nominees for the Kohl Teacher Fellowship Grant at a special meeting of the Board of Education on Monday, March 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the McDaniels Auditorium in the Doyle Administration Building, 545 West Dayton Street.

Staff members in nine categories will receive the DSA, the district's highest honor for meritorious contributions to Madison's schools. This year's ceremony marks the 15th time the Board has honored outstanding teachers and support staff in this manner. Two citizen awards also will be given. And for the sixth time, students are among the DSA honorees.

Nominees for the prestigious Kohl Teacher Fellowship Grant will compete with other top Wisconsin teachers for one of 100 grants funded by U.S. Senator Herb Kohl. In each of the last 12 years, Senator Kohl has set aside $200,000 to be awarded to Wisconsin's finest educators. Each recipient receives $1,000 and the honoree's school also receives a matching grant from the program.

DSA winners and Kohl Grant nominees are chosen by a 21-member committee made up of teachers, administrators, parents, a student and citizens.

The ceremony will be shown live on MMSD-TV, Cable Channel 10, and also will be taped for later telecast.
