FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 4, 2000
The Madison Metropolitan School District has recently been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for energy performance achievements at four high schools. The financial savings to taxpayers is $370,000 annually.
Because Madison schools saved energy and reduced pollution, the District has been added to a select list of Honor Society Members. The award is part of the Energy Star Buildings Partnership, which promotes energy savings and protection of the environment through the installation of energy-efficient lighting and building technologies.
Madison schools monitored baseline energy data and completed a specified number of technology upgrades. This year the district has upgraded more than 1.4 million square feet, reducing electricity consumption by 10 million-kilowatt hours and saving $370,000.
"We're proud of our commitment to preventing pollution through improved energy performance, and pleased to be saving money while doing so," said Madison schools superintendent Art Rainwater. "This recognition from the Energy Star program allows us to show how far we have progressed in the last year."
The energy performance upgrades were made at East, La Follette, Memorial and West high schools.
In appreciation, the EPA has sent a letter and certificate applauding Madison schools. The district will be recognized on the Energy Star Buildings web site at http://www.epa.gov/buildings/.
Energy generated by burning fossil fuels releases pollutants into the atmosphere. These pollutants contribute to smog, acid rain, and global climatic change. By using energy-efficient technologies that reduce energy use, Madison schools are helping preserve natural resources and clean the air.
