FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 1999
Student enrollment in the Madison Metropolitan School District for the 1999-2000 school year is 24,943, -- a decrease of 170 students –- according to the official enrollment count conducted on the third Friday in September, as required by state law.
The 170-student decline is less than the 214 student decrease reported last year in comparison to the year before. This year's total represents a decline of less than seven-tenths of one percent, and is down for the second year in a row.
Elementary school enrollment is down 325 students from a year ago. Middle school enrollment is up 10 students, and high school enrollment is up 145 from 1998.

The district had predicted a declining enrollment, but the final count exceeds the projection due to a higher than anticipated enrollment at all three levels. The actual enrollment (24,943) is 46 students above the projection of 24,897. There are 33 more elementary students than projected, 11 more middle school students, and two more high school students. "Even though the official count is higher than projected, we are concerned," says Superintendent Art Rainwater. "Declining enrollment puts tremendous pressure on us because of the state revenue cap. The good news is that our enrollment is up slightly over projection."
