Hartley to Head Alternative Programs

Steve Hartley has been named director of alternative programs by Superintendent Art Rainwater. The position, pending approval of the Board of Education at its April 10 meeting, will begin with the 2000-01 school year.

As director of Alternative Programs, Hartley will have oversight responsibility for several alternative programs including: Brearly Street Alternatives, Dane County Jail, Huber Center, Dane County Shelter, Shabazz High School, and others.

Hartley has been principal at Shabazz High School, the district's alternative high school, since 1989. During his time as Shabazz principal, he was also budget manager for the district's Homeless Program, principal of the Correction System Programs (since 1998) and principal for the Sherman Early Childhood Program (1991-97). He was a school psychologist at West High School from 1978-89 and worked as a teacher for the cognitively disabled for the Janesville school district from 1973-76.

Hartley received a bachelor's degree in Special Education from UW-Milwaukee in 1973. He also received a master of science in Education -- certified in school psychology – from UW-Whitewater in 1978, and in 1989 became certified in school administration through UW-Madison.

Hartley's position is being funded by the Safe Schools/Healthy Students federal grant.
