The Mann Scholars Board of Directors and the Sánchez Scholar Selection Committee have named this year's award recipients. These two scholarship programs provide financial assistance and mentoring support for graduating eighth graders in Madison schools who show great academic potential and likelihood for success in high school and beyond.
This year's Mann Scholars are Cecile Gamble, Hamilton Middle School; Fallon Jones, Jefferson Middle School; and Roosevelt Williams, Toki Middle School.
They will be recognized at a reception on Wednesday, May 17, 2000 at 4:00 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, 944 E. Gorham Street.
This year's Sánchez Scholar is Sandra Becerra of Cherokee Middle School. Named as Sánchez Scholar Finalists are Cassandra Almeida, Black Hawk Middle School; and Jennifer Mancera, Jefferson Middle School.
All three students will be recognized at the Madison Metropolitan School District Latino Graduation Celebration 2000 on Friday, May 26, 2000 at 7:30 p.m. in Room 240 at Union South, 227 North Randall Avenue.
News reporters are invited to attend the May 17 reception and the May 26 celebration.
The Sánchez Scholarship is being offered for the first time this year by Professor Roberto Sánchez, retired University of Wisconsin educator, who was inspired to create an opportunity for Hispanic students after learning of the Mann program.
The Mann Fund honors the legacy and advocacy of Bernard and Kathy Mann, African American parents whose five children graduated from Madison schools and completed college degrees.
Both funds are part of the Madison Community Foundation, and are sponsored by the Madison Metropolitan School District.
