FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THURSDAY, AUGUST 12, 1999
When East High School freshmen show up for the first day of school on Monday, August 23, Principal Milt McPike hopes their parents or guardians will be in tow. McPike is asking for help from local employers to release parents and guardians from work.
In a letter to parents and guardians of East freshmen, McPike wrote, "We realize that most parents need release time from work, and we appreciate your efforts to do this. We firmly believe that students experience more success when parents are actively involved in their teen's education." McPike suggested taking the letter to their employers when asking for release time.
In 1998, McPike was named "Educator of the Year" from the Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce, the state's largest business group. He was nominated for the award by Research Products Corporation CEO Vern Hellenbrand, of Madison. Hellenbrand participated in the "Principal For a Day" program with McPike and in his nomination letter wrote, "I observed the love and respect the students had for their principal. He was very visible in the areas of the school from the mall, through the halls on all three floors, in the classroom, and on the grounds outside the building."
Parents will simulate their child's school schedule in the morning, affording them an opportunity to meet with teachers. A picnic lunch for all is planned from ll:35 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The day's schedule is:
McPike is available for interviews by calling 246-4400.
