"Path of Voices" Project to be Unveiled at Elvehjem Museum May 5

The culmination of over one year's work by several Madison students, working with artist-in-residence Brad McCallum, will be unveiled at the Elvehjem Art Museum, 800 University Avenue, on Friday, May 5 at a reception from 6-8 p.m. that is open to the public. The student interns began working on the Path of Voices Collective in January of 1999. The project combines sculpture and oral interviews with survivors of violence, and the results are compelling.

McCallum, a 1985 graduate of West High School, has established himself as an accomplished artist. His public work, The Manhole Cover Project: a Gun Legacy, combined oral histories of individuals affected by gun violence with utility covers made from melted down, confiscated weapons.

Of the eleven student interns involved with the project, seven Madison students continue to work on it. They are: Angela Fitchard, Betsy Fried, Kelly Flynn, Luxme Hariharan, Gabe Host-Jablonski, Ben O'Neill and Hope Stege. The interns conducted over 50 interviews and have invested over 1,143 hours recording, transcribing and editing interviews. The students, as well as McCallum, will be at the reception and available for interviews.

The project is supported by CitiARTS, Evjue Foundation, Parents of Murdered Children, Wisconsin Arts Board, YWCA, Madison Metropolitan School District and private donations. After the Elvehjem opening, McCallum and the students, with input from MMSD's high schools and the community, will determine where the piece will be placed.
