FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NOVEMBER 12, 1999
Two students at Madison Memorial, David Mericle and Caroline Camic, have been selected from a pool of more than 10,000 applicants in the ThinkQuest Internet Challenge for the finals November 19-22 in Los Angeles.
Mericle, a junior, and Camic, a freshman, have teamed with a student from Switzerland, Michael Muelly, to create a Website called The Environment: A Global Challenge.
The Website "offers hundreds of informative and unbiased articles to present an in-depth analysis of environmental issues so that other students can comprehend the reality of our planet's situation," say the students. The Website address is http://library.advanced.org/26026/
Mericle, Camic and Muelly are one of five teams selected for the finals in the Interdisciplinary category. The winners, who are awarded college scholarships of up to $25,000 each, will be announced on November 22.
Mericle was on a team that won first place in the Social Sciences category of last year's ThinkQuest Challenge for a Website called "The Cuban Experience." Camic is the sister of Susannah Camic, who founded the Lilith Computer Group, a Madison schools-based program designed to meet the computer learning needs of middle school girls.
ThinkQuest is an international program for students age 12-19 that encourages them to use the Internet to create Web-based educational tools and materials.
