NOVEMBER 24, 1999
Two students at Madison Memorial, Caroline Camic and David Mericle, have won their category in the ThinkQuest Internet Challenge, an international competition for creating innovative Web sites.
Camic, Mericle and a student from Switzerland, Michael Muelly, took first place in the Interdisciplinary category for their Web site called The Environment: A Global Challenge.
Each student wins a $15,000 college scholarship. The awards were announced Monday evening, November 22, at the conclusion of the ThinkQuest Finals in Los Angeles.
It's the second consecutive year that Mericle, a junior, has won this competition that draws approximately 10,000 applicants. Last year Mericle was on a team that took first place in the Social Sciences category for a Web site called The Cuban Experience.
This year the winning Web site on the environment "offers hundreds of informative and unbiased articles to present an in-depth analysis of environmental issues so that other students can comprehend the reality of our planet's situation," say the students. The Web site address is http://library.advanced.org/26026/.
Camic is a freshman and the sister of Susannah Camic, who founded the Lilith Computer Group, a Madison schools-based program designed to meet the computer learning needs of middle school girls.
ThinkQuest is an international program for students age 12-19 that encourages them to investigate an educational topic of interest to them and create an interactive Web site.
