Dear Chávez Families:
Happy New Year.
Our educational community, dispersed though we may be, is picking up
with quality instruction where we left off before winter break as we await
our return to Chávez. There have been, however, some changes that we
want to inform you of:
- We are now able to use our gym instead of the tent as our morning
gathering place. It was nice to see how many students, parents and
teachers were excited for us to get back even to this one corner of our
world.
- We are also able to start using the cafeteria again so as of Wednesday
this week we will be serving breakfast at our school rather than at the
temporary sites.
- The before and after school program that is run at our school will be
starting up again at Chávez. They will inform their clients of the
details.
- Through the gracious efforts of the Thoreau staff we have been able to
secure a classroom there for our 4th grade and alleviate the tight quarters
and noise that had been a problem.
- We have made some modifications in the "specials" schedule which will
improve the delivery of those services.
- The end of next week marks the end of the first semester, the half way
point in the school year. It also a time when teachers will be working on
report cards. We want report cards to as accurately as possible, reflect
each child's level of mastery. Chávez report cards will reflect the
current level of performance for your students based on what you know about
them instructionally at this point. Teachers sometimes refer to prior
assessments to ascertain a child's growth from one reporting period to the
next. This is not a requirement for report cards but is information that
may be important for some students. However, we do not have access to all
beginning of the year student assessments. Therefore, teachers may not
include comments about amount of progress or growth over time your child
has made on this report card. This information can be included on the third
quarter report cards if appropriate.
- As of this writing, we do not have the results of the most recent
testing of air samples at Chávez. They are expected soon. You will be
provided this information as it becomes available. Reconstruction will not
begin until all the results ensure the safety of the building.
The administrative area in Chávez has been cleared for use so the
school secretary Linda Pollasch and I will be working out of our
Chávez offices. My office number is 442-2006, my cell phone is
220-2947.and my home phone is 274-5695. Please don't hesitate to call me.
I'm delighted to be working once again at Chávez.
Sincerely,
Howard Fried
