Dear Chávez Families and Staff,
I am writing to give you current information about the status of the
Chávez building. As you know, the district has established several steps
that must be taken to satisfactorily answer the key question:
"Have we
done everything possible to ensure that the entire building is safe for
students and staff?"
These steps have been guiding and continue to guide the work on the Chávez building. They are:
At this time, the district is still working on the first two steps.
The results of the air quality assessments that have been returned are showing that the air in areas tested is well under the standards set by the consultants for levels of mold. However, we are continuing to investigate and identify causes by visually inspecting the entire building and taking samples.
In the course of this inspection, additional areas of mold have been found. In the last letter sent home, we gave you information on three areas discovered last Friday- Rooms 115 (second grade classroom), 116A&B (special education areas), and 104B (gym office).
Over the weekend these areas were remediated. However, as visual inspection continued several other additional mold areas were discovered over the weekend in a variety of places. Remediation of these newly discovered areas will begin immediately.
The areas that are being used have been cleared by both visual inspection and air quality assessments.
We will inform you about all the areas of remediation when steps 1 and 2 above have been completed. Again the district's consultants feel that the steps we are taking are necessary to eventually allow us to return to the building with full confidence that all areas of the building are clearly acceptable. The attached memo to the Board of Education gives you some additional information about the process.
Together we will continue to provide the best instruction possible for our children.
Sincerely,
Howard Fried
Principal
