Dear Chávez Families and Staff:
We had a wonderful morning together on the last day of school. It was
great to have us all under one roof. It felt like a school again. We began
the morning with a PTO sponsored breakfast for the staff followed by an all
school assembly. The activities included the pledge, a musical selection
from different grades who during the year had performed in the evening here
but many other students had not had a chance to hear them, recognition of
our 5th graders, happy birthdays to those who have summer birthdays, a
chance to play on our greatly missed playground and lots of cheers for all
of us who were part of this memorable year. Special thanks to the PTO for
the breakfast, your ongoing support and for sponsoring the "Chávez Cheetah
T-shirt" that was given to the adults who are part of the "Chávez Adventure
Team"-- and special thanks to John Slattery for designing our cheetah
logo.
Here's the latest information on the reconstruction of our school
provided by Rick Hopke, MMSD Coordinator of Facilities Engineering:
- Bachmann Construction Company, Inc. (BCCI) has completed the
reconstruction of the walls on the first floor.
- Moisture tests of the concrete floor slabs have been completed and
indicate levels are within acceptable levels for installation of flooring
under cabinets. Crews have completed the floor patching and are working on
installation of cabinets in the Kindergarten area.
- Rubber base is being installed on the first floor and is approximately
75 percent complete.
- Crews are installing ceiling tile in first floor classrooms.
- Transfer grills, protected with plastic, are being installed between
classrooms and corridors.
- Electricians are attaching electrical devices and installing cover
plates on first floor.
- BCCI is sealing interior masonry control joints above the ceilings per
original construction documents.
- Installation of acoustical insulation, gypsum board and taping on the
second floor walls has been completed. Crews are painting walls on the
second floor.
- BCCI is fabricating metal pans to be installed under lockers prior to
installation.
- All return and exhaust ducts continue to be protected with filter media
to prevent construction dust from entering the ventilation systems.
- Interior roof drains have been insulated to prevent condensation.
- BCCI is ordering brick to be used during repairs to the exterior
flashing.
- An infrared scan of the roof conducted by our roof consultant, SRI, has
been completed. Two roof drains are to be investigated further as a result
of the scan.
- A water leak from recent rains was reported in the custodial office and
is in an area being reviewed for repairs following receipt of the
brick.
- Removal of the lower two inches of gypsum board in the office areas is
scheduled to begin next week.
- BCCI has provided a schedule that indicates that majority of work on
the first floor classrooms will be complete by the end of June and the
second floor by the end of July.
