Letter to Parents and Staff

February 11, 2002

Dear Chávez Families and Staff,

I am writing to let you know that after taking into consideration numerous factors, I have decided that it is in the best educational interests of students to keep all Chávez classes at their current host schools for the remainder of the school year.

Our last reports from the consultants who are working to establish the cause of mold growth and who are overseeing the remediation, indicate that the earliest we could return the classes to Chávez would be April 15th. There would be at least another two- week adjustment period for students, parents and staff and this would put us into the last month of school. Remaining in their current school locations will stabilize the educational environment for our students. This will also ensure that sufficient time is given to the reconstruction of Chávez.

The transportation schedule for students will remain as it is currently. Students will continue to meet at Chávez in the morning and return there in the afternoon. Student absences should continue to be reported to the Chávez safe arrival number and will then be communicated to host schools each day.

We have discussed this decision with the principals of the host schools and Chávez Principal Howard Fried. Everyone is eager to continue making Chávez students and staff feel a part of the school they are attending each day. We will continue to provide support necessary for the Chávez classes and the host schools to ensure the best educational environment possible for all of our students.

Sincerely,

Art Rainwater
